ESKARIAM recognised by FINANCIAL TIMES as one of Europe’s most disruptive businesses in the legal sector
On 13 October, the prestigious Financial Times Innovative Lawyers Awards gala will take place in London, considered one of the major events in the European legal sector.
Equipo ESKARIAM
ESKARIAM has been selected this year to compete for the “Business of Law: Challeging traditional models” award, together with major law firms from Italy, England, Ireland, Wales and Cyprus. Being among those selected is a great recognition of the effort, hard work and overcoming that we have experienced since the beginning of ESKARIAM just 4 years ago.
We were born with a clear idea: to defend great causes with an innovative model in the sector
At ESKARIAM, from the very beginning, we knew where we wanted to go. The more traditional law firms in Spain were not managing to understand the real needs of the class action market, and that is where ESKARIAM found its place under the premise of offering our clients high quality and a differential service based on innovation.
In order to be able to operate in the class action market, it was necessary to make a 180-degree turnaround in the structure that had already been established in the law firms: a pyramidal organisation that made little use of technology and that applied massiveness when managing cases. The organisational structure at ESKARIAM was born completely different. We work in a transversal way on each case, bringing together professionals from different disciplines under a single, common objective, who contribute an enriching and different vision (in addition to lawyers, we have economists, engineers, data analysts, marketing professionals, among others).
We apply Legal Project Management to this organisation by means of modern management systems that allow us to structure the work in a suitable way and with maximum efficiency, both in terms of time and resources.
We have managed to integrate great professionals, specialists in their field and of recognised prestige, who provide their services under a successful model that covers the costs of their claim and the risk of imposition of costs, which allows the affected party access to a high value service without the need to pay or risk any amount, linking our fees to the success of the claim, aligning the interests of the client with those of ESKARIAM.
This has resulted in a unique business model in the legal sector, which is why we have been nominated in the category ‘Business of Law: Challenging traditional models’ of the FT Innovative Lawyers Europe 2022.
Technology and processes as a tool to achieve collective efficiency
The use of technological tools at ESKARIAM is essential to be able to deal with the large amount of data and documents to be analysed. Thanks to our TMO (Transformation Management Office) team, we have been able to develop our own tools, as well as make use of technologies already proven in other sectors, to apply them to our market: collective actions. Our ESKARIAM Platform is particularly noteworthy. This tool helps us to manage the life cycle of our customers in the commercial phase, i.e. it allows us to monitor our customers, thus being able to provide them at all times with optimal and appropriate attention to their needs. Another advantage of this tool is that it allows us to efficiently handle large volumes of information, making data particularly relevant to us. Using Data Science techniques, we set up a data layer that allows us to manage the status of our portfolio (cases) from a strategic point of view and prepare the necessary dashboards for the Business area to make decisions based on data.
Technology requires the right processes, and all of this allows us to achieve the collective efficiency we seek and to know the status of our clients and their cases.
Our litigation portfolio
After a successful start handling claims for hundreds of clients who made down payments for house purchases, both from clients who trusted our team and by acquiring litigation portfolios from other law firms with difficulties in taking on large volumes of claims, we broke into the market for damages claims arising from competition law infringements with the Milk Cartel, making ESKARIAM the market leader with more than 7,000 clients together with its partner Hausfeld, a firm with a presence in the United States and Europe that has won landmark trials, negotiating complex settlements and recovering billions for its clients against the largest players in the legal market.
We have recently participated, together with Hausfeld and the Portuguese law firms J+Legal, in the Apple case, and Cardigos, against Google, in two class actions filed in the Portuguese courts for abuse of dominance and excessive pricing in the App Store and Google Play Store.
We are also working on other claims which will soon be made public and which again will demonstrate a different way of understanding and working in the legal environment.
Acknowledgements: Expansión Jurídico Awards, EFI Awards and European recognition at FT Innovative Lawyers
As a result of our perseverance and focus on a new way of doing law, in 2021 we received our first nomination as finalists in the Expansión Jurídico Awards for ‘Most Innovative Project’ with the management of the Milk Cartel case. In this project, at ESKARIAM, we focused all our efforts on optimising our resources in order to achieve the best possible results.
Also in 2021 we were nominated for the ‘Premios Eficacia’, highly coveted awards within the marketing and communication sector in Spain as they represent excellence in strategy, creativity and implementation of commercial campaigns.
In 2022 we were once again recognised by the Expansión Jurídico Awards, being selected as finalists, for the second year in a row, for ‘Most Innovative Project’. This time we presented a self-developed tool: ‘ESKARIAM iDoc Engine’, a legaltech tool incorporated into the ESKARIAM Platform that processes and automates data extracted from documents relevant to cases.
The leap to Europe has come with the nomination for the Financial Times Innovative Lawyers in the category ‘Business of Law: Challenging traditional models’, in which we have been selected as finalists alongside leading companies in innovation at European level. This category invites law firms to submit initiatives or projects related to strategy, management or corporate operations.
The path has not been easy, but believing in an innovative project and having a team that makes it grow is the perfect mix to be able to change the established system in this sector. At ESKARIAM we don’t want to stop believing and we will reportt to the finalists’ Gala with the enthusiasm and ambition to bring the award home.
At ESKARIAM, we keep moving forward.
